Deaf and Hard of Hearing

The Program for Students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing (D/HH) at Camden County College provides support services for deaf and hard of hearing students seeking career and academic training. Program staff are fluent in American Sign Language. Support services for students include academic advising, interpreting, note-taking, C-Print captioning, assistive listening equipment loans and referrals to external agencies serving deaf and hard of hearing individuals.

Reasonable accommodations are provided on a case by case basis according to the documentation submitted. Accommodations may include:

  • Extended time to complete tests, quizzes, exams
  • Distraction free testing environment

Transition Services

Students can contact the Program for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students directly to schedule an appointment for transition services. Camden County College New Student Orientations, Tours, and Transition Fairs are accessible for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students needing accommodations.

Tutoring

All students are STRONGLY encouraged to attend tutoring. Small study groups and other tutorial assistance programs are provided for all students, including students with disabilities. These services, led by professionals and peers, are free of charge to all students and are based on the continuation of college funding. All tutoring is conducted on campus.

All students must complete a Tutor Request Form to receive ASL interpreted tutor sessions. They are also provided in the D/HH program office. 

Assistive Technology

The Program for Students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing office is equipped with a Video Phone available for student use. The VP is available for student business, such as contacting DVR offices. Loans of assistive listening devices (ALD’s) are available each semester. These are small pocket talker devices that can help students who are hard of hearing to. Also, C-Print captioning is available for students in certain classes. Make an appointment with D/HH advisor for more information.

*Requests for interpreters for extra activities must be made at least 48 hours in advance.

Academic and Career Counseling

The College encourages students who are deaf or hard of hearing to contact the D/HH program to arrange for services as soon as they submit an application to the College. Advisement specialists fluent in ASL are available to ease the transition into college.

New Jersey Basic Skills Testing

This test of basic skills determines the level of mastery in the areas of reading comprehension, sentence sense, essay writing, computation, and elementary algebra. This is a computerized test which allows students to work at their own pace/rate. However, students are given 50 minutes to complete the essay portion of the test. Students who require extended time must request a letter from our office prior to the test.

After receiving the Basic Skills Test results, students are encouraged to register for classes through the D/HH program office. This can make the registration and curriculum planning process more effective. Students are also welcome to discuss learning strategies and techniques to maximize chances for success at the college level.
